About Girls Inc.: At Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, our mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Since 1983, Girls Inc. of Metro Denver has delivered programs that focus on the development of the whole girl. At Girls Inc. she learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities and rights for all girls.
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver’s intentional, research-based programming is delivered to girls ages 6 to 20 from diverse backgrounds across the Metro Denver area. Girls participate in programs at our Center on West Colfax, in partnership with schools and community organizations, and virtually. We also award approximately $50,000 in college scholarships annually. Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is able to provide life-changing programs to over 2,000 girls each year.
For COVID-19 Response: Girls Inc. of Metro Denver participants and families are especially vulnerable during the COVID-19 crisis. Many families already struggle with economic insecurity, and systematic inequalities related to the digital divide, housing instability, food insecurity, threat of violence, and other types of trauma that disproportionally affect the low-income and communities of color which GIMD serves.
Upon hearing directly from girls and families about their most urgent needs in these areas, Girls Inc. of Metro Denver provided additional wraparound services including an emergency supply bank with shelf-stable food, water, diapers, feminine hygiene products and household items for families to access, free, daily “grab n’ go” dinners for children/youth up to 18 years old, and technology including Chromebooks and laptops to support online learning.
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver’s programs have also shifted to a hands-on, remote learning model. This provided girls with screen-free activities that can be done from the safety of their homes, paired with opportunities to virtually to Girls Inc. educators and peers. Kits containing materials for their Girls Inc. classes are picked up regularly and educators teach activities virtually — remote, hands-on programs include Girl (support) Groups, mentoring, career readiness, scholarship support, mindfulness and mental health; Eureka! participants dissected a sheep’s brain from home; a 25-member Teen Leadership Board meets virtually; and the College Womxn’s Group hosts virtual connection time. Additionally, in fall of 2020 Girls Inc. of Metro Denver opened on-site Learning Communities to provide in person academic and technology support to high need girls and families.
Opportunities to Get Involved: Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is always looking for volunteers to inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold! We will soon be recruiting for volunteers to assist with virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities this summer with elementary, middle, and high school girls. Volunteers assist our instructors as they work to implement hands-on, pro-girl curriculum, help supervise free-time, and build relationships with girls in our community.
