Spark the Change Colorado is adding a new Volunteer Program, the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), to seven counties across Colorado! The counties are: Alamosa, Huerfano, Los Animas, Montezuma, Park, Jefferson, and Broomfield.
Since 1971, RSVP, one of the largest volunteer efforts in the nation for people 55 and over, has matched older adults who are willing to help with local organizations on the front lines of meeting community needs. Food insecurity will be the focus area of service in these seven counties.
To spotlight this exciting new program, we wanted to introduce you to the Team that’s making it happen!
Meet Josephine Boynton
RSVP Huerfano County Manager
Josie Boynton received a B.A in Psychology & Ecology/Biodiversity with a minor in French from the University of Denver. She previously worked at Conservation Legacy (an environmental nonprofit) leading a small crew of AmeriCorps members collecting indicators of land health on public lands. They would hike up to three miles into public lands to survey species, measure plant heights, analyze soils, and more! Before that, Josie did stipend-based work as an English teaching assistant in Cambrai, France. She also currently serves as the secretary of the Huerfano County Parks and Recreation District Board.
In her free time, Josie loves botany and developed that skill a lot through her previous jobs. She also enjoys hiking, reading, drawing, & painting. She also shares that she likes sewing, “Not well, but I love doing it!” Josie also absolutely adores Huerfano county! The Spanish peaks hold a special place in her heart and one of her favorite ways to spend the weekend is to go up to her partner’s cabins on a ranch on the East Peak. Josie and her fiancé also love going to movies at the Fox Theatre in downtown Walsenburg and playing mini-golf at the local golf course. She says she’s also obsessed with her dog, Leo, and cat, Fabienne!
Josie will put her unique knowledge and love for Huerfano to use in her new position managing RSVP volunteers addressing food insecurity in Huerfano County! When asked what she’s most excited about, Josie shares, “I am so excited to make community engagement my job! I really enjoyed my previous job, but I transitioned to this work because I want to have a more active hand in shaping and building up my community right at home!”
Welcome, Josie, from all of us at the Spark Team! We are so excited to add your stellar experience, talents, and energy to our growing team. We look forward to all the great work you will do supporting the community of Huerfano County!
